Anthropic's AI assistant now works in the sidebar of Google's editors. It reads and changes file content without copying it into a separate window, but it has limitations that teams should know before deployment.

Anthropic released a public beta of the Claude for Google Workspace add-on on Tuesday, October 6, an open test version for users. A single installation from the Google Workspace Marketplace adds a sidebar with Claude in Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. This is reported by, among others, Spider's Web, 9to5Google, and RuntimeWire.

In Docs, the assistant fixes language errors, rewrites paragraphs in a different tone, and shortens text without disrupting formatting. It also turns a task list into a table and inserts a summary at the cursor position. It can see collaborators' comments and suggestions and apply edits accordingly. In Sheets, it writes formulas and builds pivot tables and charts, while in Slides it creates slides based on existing layouts and themes.

By default, Claude shows a preview of changes before applying them. The “Accept all edits” mode lets users skip approving routine fixes, but adding links or changing sharing permissions still requires the user's consent. Changes are saved to the file's version history. Anthropic says Claude treats document content as data, not instructions. This is meant to protect against prompt injection attacks, or hidden instructions embedded in a file.

The assistant reads text only, so it skips photos and diagrams. According to RuntimeWire, a single operation stops after about six minutes, the add-on does not work in Firefox, and closing the panel interrupts the task. A paid Claude plan is required: Spider's Web lists Pro, Team, and Enterprise, while RuntimeWire adds the Max plan. On business accounts, the domain administrator must first mark the app as trusted in the Google console.

Claude competes directly in these applications with Gemini, the assistant built in by Google. Teams working in Google Workspace can therefore choose between two models without changing their office suite.
