Amazon blocks Meta's AI agent Muse from its store
Meta's shopping agent will no longer make purchases on Amazon.com. The store deemed its activity a violation of its rules. The dispute shows that access for AI agents to commerce is now decided by the biggest platforms.
Since Sunday, September 20, users of Muse, Meta's personal AI agent, have not been able to use it to shop on Amazon.com. They see a message saying that access by an unauthorized AI agent violates the service's rules. The block was described on September 21 by Bloomberg (opens in a new tab).
Meta launched Muse in the US on September 8. It runs on a virtual computer with its own browser. Before a purchase, it is supposed to ask the user for confirmation. According to Amazon, Meta never arranged such access with it. The company had previously asked for its store to be removed from the services supported by Muse, and when that did not happen, it blocked the agent.
Amazon accuses Muse of not identifying itself as an external agent, even though it can enter a customer's account, view order history and place an order. Meta says the agent cannot see passwords or card details. Amazon also points out that complaints after AI errors, such as the wrong size, would still be handled by Amazon and the seller.
Critics, including TechTimes, note that since 2025 Amazon has been developing its own Buy for Me agent, which shops in other companies' stores. Amazon responds that its agent identifies itself to those stores, and brands can opt out.
This is not the first such dispute. In November 2025, Amazon sued Perplexity over a shopping agent in the Comet browser, and in March 2026 it obtained a court order blocking its access to customer accounts. In August 2026, a federal appeals court overturned that order, finding that access to Amazon's servers is obtained by the user, not by Perplexity.
Advertising revenue is in the background: in 2025, Amazon earned $68.6 billion from it. An agent that chooses a product on its own based on the user's instruction may bypass sponsored results. Shopify is taking a different path by opening up to Muse. Meta announced support for Shop Pay payments.
For online sellers, this means that the availability of their offers to AI agents now depends on the rules of the platform they sell on.
